PSO Concertmaster candidate Phoebe Tsang takes the stage at The New World, November 504 Oct 2016, Posted by News in
In addition to all of the programming excitement of the PSO’s 50th anniversary season, concerts throughout 2016/17 will feature the PSO’s candidates for Concertmaster.
The Concertmaster search began this summer with interviews and initial auditions. Shortlisted candidates were then invited to perform a concert cycle with the PSO during the 2016/17 concert season.
As part of a concert cycle, PSO Concertmaster candidates will take on all of the duties of the Concertmaster role. This means that they will set the bowings for music, attend all orchestra rehearsals and coach the PSO community players. The concert cycle culminates with a concert performance.
After the 2016/17 concert season closes, the successful Concertmaster candidate will be announced and will start as Concertmaster for the PSO’s 2017/18 concert season.
The PSO’s first Concertmaster candidate of 2016/17, British-Canadian violinist Phoebe Tsang, began rehearsing with the orchestra this week.
Praised for her “total commitment to bringing the music fully to life” (Allan Pulker, The WholeNote), Phoebe is a multidisciplinary artist whose love of music spans classical and contemporary genres.
Phoebe has soloed at the Bimhuis jazz club, Amsterdam, and performed alongside experimental violinist Mary Oliver at Café Oto, London.
Currently Assistant Concertmaster of the Ontario Philharmonic, Phoebe was a member of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the founding artistic director of Alicier Arts Chamber Music.
Phoebe’s primary teacher was the late Professor Lorand Fenyves, who inspired her belief in the importance of mentorship by enabling her to serve as his teaching assistant.
Phoebe is a published poet, librettist and short story writer. Her works have been commissioned by ensembles including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Continuum Contemporary Music, and Talisker Players.
A “true Renaissance woman” (Sinfonia Toronto), Phoebe holds a degree in architecture and is a qualified yoga instructor and professional tarot consultant. Her mission as a performer, teacher and coach, is to celebrate the creative spirit within us all.
