Peterborough Symphony Orchestra Launches 2014/15 Season
Peterborough, ON – The Peterborough Symphony launches its 2014/15 season with six exhilarating concerts that bring music lovers the best music this region has to offer.
Ticket holders can look forward to a romantic cello concerto, Tchaikovsky’s passionate 6th symphony, the world music of Pavlo, a true community Christmas concert with the Peterborough Pop Ensemble & the Kawartha Youth Orchestra, and a new Family Matinee, “Stories and Music”.
The symphony will begin the performance season with a new event, Bows & Birchbark to be held at the Canadian Canoe Museum on Saturday, October 4th. This kitchen-party style event has a silent auction, finger foods & cash bar, free access to the museum and of course music – from celtic to classic tunes from our own PSO musicians. Only $40 each, call us for tickets at (705) 742-1992!
Monday, October 6th will begin the business of the PSO season with an Annual General Meeting at Trinity United Church (360 Reid St., Peterborough), starting at 6pm. Subscribers and other members are invited to receive reports on last season’s activity, the plan for the future and elect directors for the year.
On Saturday, November 8th be swept off your feet by the romance of Schumann and Saint-Saëns’ exquisite cello concerto performed by the symphony’s own enchanting cellist, Zuzanna Chomicka-Newnham in Autumn Enchantment.
The PSO brings together three of the region’s finest performing groups to celebrate the winter season with Home for the Holidays. On December 6th, the PSO brings the nostalgia and feel-good spirit of the holidays in a real community celebration. Last season’s collaborators, Peterborough Pop Ensemble and Kawartha Youth Orchestra will join them onstage again at Showplace.
This show will get the whole family into the spirit of the season with such classics as Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite and White Christmas! Be prepared to break out in song with our annual carol sing and clap-out with the rousing Radetzky March!
On February 7th,Dark Passion will feature guest artists and members of the Penderecki String Quartet, Jerzy Kaplanek, violin and Christine Vlajk, viola who will weave together a tapestry of light and sound that is divinely Mozart in his Sinfonia Concertante; a perfect counterpoint for Tchaikovsky’s passionate and timeless 6th Symphony.
Also new for the PSO is their Stories and Music Family matinees in a return to Market Hall theatre with two showings at 2pm and 3:30pm on March 21st. Share the magic of stories through music with your little ones as we tell the tales of Babar the little Elephant, Mother Goose and more! A great afternoon treat for the young and young at heart, this show is specially priced at $30 for adults and $10 for youth.
The PSO eagerly anticipate working with the prodigious Jan Lisiecki, a young Canadian pianist who signed on with Deutsche Grammophon at the age of 15 and was nominated for a Juno for classical album of the year in 2013. Peterborough is very lucky to find space in his schedule, which often sees him travelling the world! This exquisite guest artist will join us on Saturday, June 6th at George St. United church as they present Summer in Vienna.
Subscriptions are now available at the Peterborough Symphony office by calling (705) 742-1992 or visiting week days from 10:30-12:30 or by appointment. Single tickets will go on sale at the end of September.
