Sarah started learning violin in public school at age seven and participated in school, university and community orchestras over the years as well as a variety of one-off musical performances. Her high school, North Toronto Collegiate, had a strong string music program, which gave her a good foundation for later participating in community orchestras. She studied violin privately with Nancy Mathis in high school and later with Arkady Yanivker. Her father was an amateur cellist and grandmother a singer, and music has always been an important part of her life.
Sarah has lived in England, Switzerland and the United States and has travelled abroad and throughout Canada. Home ownership means staying close to home for now, but that’s just fine with her. “One of the great joys of having a home, after many years of apartment living, is being able to practice violin without a mute at any time of day or night. I’m not sure the cats agree, however, since they ask to go out whenever I open my violin case!”
Sarah completed a B.A. in French and a Teaching English as a Second Language Certificate at the University of Toronto and a Public Relations Certificate at Ryerson University. While at U. of T., she collaborated with the Linguistics Department to launch Friends of Linguistics at the University of Toronto, which offers occasional free lectures for anyone interested in linguistics.
Her career has been in administration and communications. She currently works in communications and member services at the Social Investment Organization in Toronto.
