Nancy Christine Foote was born and raised in Bowmanville, Ontario. Her interest in music began at an early age, as she began playing the piano in grade two, and took up the flute in grade nine. Nancy, a mezzo-soprano, began taking singing lessons in grade seven and has sung professionally in various venues throughout the Peterborough area.
Nancy received a Bachelor of Education from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Music from McMaster University, Hamilton. She has combined her obvious love of music and her teaching skills to become a music teacher for four school boards. Nancy is presently teaching for the PVNCCDSB and accepts private students.
In addition to music, Nancy has a love of the performing arts, having taken ballet for five years. Also, she was the Provincial and National Champion in baton twirling in her teenage years.
Nancy has been the Principal Flute in the Peterborough Symphony Orchestra since 2009, after joining in 2005. In addition to playing in the PSO, Nancy currently plays with the Northumberland Orchestra and Choir (Principal) and is a founding member of ‘Silver Key’, a flute and piano duo. Previously, she was Principal with the Concordia Pops Orchestra, and during her university days with the McMaster Symphony Orchestra and the McMaster concert band.
Nancy is the music director at Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Port Hope, playing piano and organ, singing and designing the music program for the parish. She is frequently hired as a guest flute soloist, pianist and vocalist in the Northumberland area.
Nancy studied flute under Suzanne Schulman for four years and notes: “Under Ms. Schulman’s tutelage my technique was greatly improved, and her appreciation of my sensitivity to music and ability to capture the nuances of the music encouraged me to play in symphony orchestras.”
Nancy was also a member of the Girl Guides of Canada for many years and was awarded the Canada Cord, the highest honour in that organization.
Nancy has four children (three sons and a daughter), four dogs, two cats and two horses. She loves to ride her horses, practice her music, sew and knit, and to take long solitary walks in order to enjoy the beauty and natural music of nature.
